Urdaibai.

In 1984, UNESCO awarded Urdaibai the title of Biosphere Reserve, a space with a unique ecological, biological and landscape value, but also for tourism. The main reason is that it is an important resting and wintering area for migratory birds, as well as being the most important wetland in the Basque Country.

The towns of Urdaibai also contribute to the attractiveness of this area. Gernika, Bermeo, Mundaka, Elantxobe and Lekeitio, among other towns in the area, enjoy a particular cultural and historical character that generates the interest and curiosity of thousands of tourists every year.

Gernika.

Gernika is a town that is 5 km (7 minutes) from our location, and is the nerve center of this region. For those who stay in our accommodation, you will find in Gernika what you need, from restaurants to supermarkets.

Since 1936, Gernika has achieved historical importance and international recognition due to the well-known bombing of Gernika, an event that was immortalized in Pablo Picasso's painting “Gernika”.

What to visit.

In the town, there are attractions of interest such as:

  • Museo de La Paz.

  • Museo de Euskal Herria.

  • Parque de los pueblos de Europa.

  • The Casa de Juntas: an emblematic place where the Basque presidents swear their positions, always under the Gernika tree. Until the 18th century, the General Assemblies of Bizkaia were held here to debate the common problems of the Lordship of Bizkaia.

On your visit to Gernika-Lumo, we recommend using this link. In this, you will find a reportage with rotating images that show the bombed Gernika of 1936 and the Gernika of today.
